"Flow... such a short easy mono-syllabic word. Yet we often halt, digress or resist... so much that we lose our ability to simply let it flow."

This time it’s my all-time favorite books such as Creativity and Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. This man inspired me on many occasions to continue writing just by opening either of the two books of his I own. Both were purchased as soon as they were published on recommendation of one of the most beautiful bookstore owners I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. Sadly, she is no longer with us.

Mihaly, however, is still going strong. While he has written many books, the two I own were my joyful introduction to his work.

Honestly, I love these books so much, if the house were on fire, they are about all I would grab. Pictures? I can get copies from family. Other things are easy to replace. Eventually. These books are priceless to me. The titles are:

“Creativity: Flow and the Psychology of Discovery and Invention”, New York: Harper Collins, 1996.

“Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience”, New York: Harper & Row, 1990.

It is no surprise that Professor Csikszentmihalyi is director of the Quality of Life Research Center (QLRC). This is  a research institute devoted to studying “positive psychology.” This includes the human strengths such as optimism, creativity, intrinsic motivation, and responsibility. Here’s a link where you can listen to what Mihaly’s work is about:

Just watch him for a few minutes or pick up one of his books. I would be very surprised if you could put his work down or stop listening to him because I certainly cannot. Not that I want to.

I’m so in love with this man and his work. Sigh… Brilliance doesn’t even begin to cover it. His gifts are immeasurable.

By the way, my backside hurts from writing nearly 12 hours today so that is why you get a skimpy blog tonight.

But trust me, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi is anything but skimpy. Mind food, soul food and far more than food for thought. It’s my belief that if he can’t get your motor running, nothing will! Enjoy!
